This is a NYS Parks Taconic Region Challenge cache!
You’ll find this cache near a maple tree covered in crustose lichen. Lichen are simple, slow-growing organisms that typically form on rocks, walls, and trees. Lichen does not harm the tree it grows on, and may help the health of the tree by retaining moisture and providing another layer of protection. Lichens are compound organisms, meaning they are composed of both fungi and algae interwoven together. It is estimated that 6% of Earth’s land surface is covered by lichen and there are 20,000 known species of lichens.
There are three main growth forms of lichen –crustose, foliose, and fruticose. This one is a crustose, meaning it strongly adheres to the substrate (maple tree), making separation impossible without destroying the tree.
Lichens may be long-lived, with some considered to be among the oldest living things. Lichens are used to date events in a method called lichenometry. For example, glacial deposits can be dated using the growth rate of the lichen and the surface area currently covering the rock.
Dogs are allowed on leash.
