Las migraciones de las golondrinas tienen cientos de años, pero fue recién en 1776 que fray Junípero Serra, un franciscano español, levantó un convento en California. Al observar la increíble cantidad de pájaros de la misma especie que sobrevolaban estos cielos comenzó a realizar un registro doble: no sólo se dedicó a llevar la cuenta del número de fieles que se acercaban a su iglesia, sino también a registrar la cantidad de aves iguales que todos los años y para la misma época volvían al lugar de siempre.
Lo cierto es que, a mediados del mes de marzo, California recibe con una calurosa, veraniega y multitudinaria fiesta el vuelo de la especie que, luego de pasar el verano en el país del norte, comienza a emigrar hacia América del Sur, para volver a surcar los cielos argentinos el mes de septiembre.
Villa Ventana, en la provincia de Buenos Aires, es uno de los destinos preferidos de la especie, donde se han contabilizado la mayor cantidad de ejemplares. Esto motivó a los pobladores locales y asociaciones vecinales a realizar distintos monumentos en homenaje a estas hermosas aves.
En el caso de Villa Ventana, el monumento en su honor se encuentra apenas se divisa la entrada desde la ruta provincial que la une con Sierra de la Ventana.
Los indígenas que poblaron las sierras antes del siglo pasado las bautizaron con el nombre mapuche de “pilmayquen” que significa “pájaro de la primavera” o “de la floración”, ya que en el hemisferio sur es durante esta época del año cuando todo florece nuevamente y comienza el tiempo de cosecha.
