Welcome to the WALK BACK IN TIME series where you will trek on an amazing journey to a secret valley, to one of Canberra's early heritage spots. Your caching adventure will take you to shearing sheds,shearing quarters and hay sheds from the 1800 's. You will follow the trail and discover a former historical school site, a charcoal kiln site, former machinery relics, sheep loading areas and many homesteads. One homestead features tables and chairs plus a fresh water supply for your convenience. BUT, THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TOUR is the cache location at the Colverwell Graves.
Two graves with stone headstones and footstones mark the burials of Elizabeth and Margaret Colverwell, who drowned in Glen Burn Creek in December 1837 aged six and five years. Their father Luke Colverwell erected the gravestones, and the burials are believed to be the OLDEST MARKED GRAVES IN THE ACT. Additional burials believed to be at the same place are of their sister Eliza who died in 1875 and their parents Luke (died 1876) and Mary Colverwell. These are the oldest 4 known marked graves in the ACT.
The Glenburn Heritage Precinct consists of a series of three interconnected walks. https://www.environment.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/1077827/Glenburn-brochure-for-web18.5.17.pdf stand alone walks that include the Glenburn Heritage Trail (10.4km) and the Burbong Heritage Trail (10km), and the longer Glenburn Loop Trail (12km) that combines both of the stand alone walks.
NOTE THESE IMPORTANT POINTS:
1/ Car Parking is at the same parking co-ords supplied for all caches and caches are best completed in the order of 1 to 7. The parking location is a logging road so please park up on the grass, off the gravel road. There is a free brocure in the container at the start ,PLEASE TAKE ONE TO ASSIST YOUR WALK.It is a 30 min walk to the first cache.The cache tour is available 24/7.
2/ Is is an Approx' 2 hour/40 min bike ride or 3 hour/10 min walk ,allowing for average walk speeds, search times, reading info board times and rest breaks.About 10.5 km's all up.You may certainly complete this at night by torch.
3/ Just follow the trail of GREEN POSTS WITH ARROWS and informations boards at every historical site. It is a logical sequence .The arrow will point your way to a gate to go over a creek bridge at times.SO TRUST THE ARROWS.There is a seat and information board at every location.
4/ Mobile phone reception is very good at all locations.
5/ There are tables and chairs at cache NO 4 and also a fresh water tank behind the homestead.
6/ There are no toilets out there or bins so take your rubbish with you.
7/ There are some rolling hills up and down .The steepest longest climb is between caches 6 and 7.
8/ There are no micro caches and no clues.All caches are small or bigger and have a log book, pencil and plenty of swaps.Please replace each log book in its zip lock bag properly and rehide as found -thank you.
