This cache will take you to the entrance of Bunyan airfield, the home site of the Canberra Gliding Club.
Bunyan Airfield is the location where Rick Agnew set the Australian altitude record for a glider flight with a climb to 33000 ft above sea level. The Australian Alps is a 7000 ft ridge that runs north – south. When strong Westerlies are blowing, the wind hits this ridge and is deflected upwards. If conditions are right, this upward deflection results in waves of air many times higher than the ridge. Using tactics similar to a surfer, the glider is flown along the rising side of the wave. These waves can often be seen marked by lenticular-shaped clouds on their crests as shown in the photo in the gallery.
The gliders are also flown in thermals, ridge lift, convergence zones, and seabreeze fronts from this site. They fly in calm weather too with training flights in their two-seater sailplanes and air experience flights are often available.
They welcome visitors. So, after your cache find, if the gate is open, go in and have a look and a chat. For more info, see www.canberragliding.org.
