Geocache Description:

Nine Hundred fourteenth in the Famous People (FP) Series - Andy Devine
Andy Devine worked extensively in radio and is well remembered for his role as Jingles, Guy Madison's sidekick in The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, which also ran on television for eight seasons from 1951 through 1958.

It was first thought that his peculiar wheezy voice would prevent him from moving to the talkies, but instead it became his trademark. Devine claimed that his distinctive voice resulted from a childhood accident in which he fell while running with a curtain rod in his mouth at the Beale Hotel in Kingman, causing the rod to pierce the roof of his mouth. When he was able to speak again, he had a labored, scratchy, duo-tone voice.

One sound effect which distinguished Matt Dillon from other characters was that he was the only one who wore spurs. Thus the audience could follow Matt after his saying something like, “I think I’ll go over to the Longbranch,” to his deputy, Chester, who might say, “All right, Mr. Dillon.” Then we’d hear footsteps with spurs cross the marshal’s office, and out the door.
