First of all, as with all cemetery hides, please be respectful! Nothing is placed on any grave markers and you are not required to climb on any grave markers.
THE HISTORY:
White Plains Cemetery is a small pre-Civil War family cemetery in the middle of a large residential neighborhood in Cary. It is one of the oldest historic sites in the area and one of the last local remnants of 18th century settlement.
One notable North Carolinian in this cemetery is Nathaniel Jones. Jones was a plantation owner who owned over 10,000 acres of land in eastern Cary and held various public offices.
Near the end of Nathaniel's life, slavery no longer sat well with his conscience. He wished to die with his conscience clear, so he ordered that his slaves were to be freed upon his death. This was in 1815, decades before the Civil War, and unheard of at the time.
