All kinds of creatures will be on hand at the animal tent, petting farm and live animals presentations.  Fishing poles and bait are provided.  The whole family will enjoy this FREE event!   For more information, please visit the park's event page

The geocaching event will run from 11:30 AM until 1 PM, and will include FTF raffles for the fifteen new caches

Schedule for the day:

  •  11:30      Event check in
  •  12:00      Raffles for FTF's
  •  12:30      New cache coordinates handed out, and enjoy the Naturefest.

Crosswinds Marsh is one of the largest man-made wetlands in the country.  It was built to replace the wetlands that were paved over to expand Wayne County's Detroit Metro Airport (the McNamara terminal).   Wayne County, together with Sumpter Township, purchased over 900 acres of farmland that, believe it or not, were once wetland that had been converted into farm fields by draining the land in a process that took over a year.   They flooded former farm fields, planted new wetland plants and transplanted endangered species from metro Airport.  The area is managed by the Wayne County Parks.

DO NOTE that the park utilizes porta-potties and has no fresh running water or electricity.

If you are intending to hunt for the new caches, please come prepared with long pants, shoes and socks (not sandals or flip-flops), and insect repellent. This time of year in the woods of Southeastern Michigan there are ticks and mosquitoes a plenty!

What to bring:

GPSr and/or phone and gear bag
Lawn chairs (very limited # of picnic tables)
Lunch/Bottled Water/Beverages
Trackables
Ultraviolet light
Insect repellant

  • Q:    Will there be a GPX file available for the new caches?
  • A:    Yup. A GPX file of the new caches will be available, and we will be loading GPS units with GSAK and making the file available via email at the event. We will be willing to help people who have trouble the best we can, but with no guarantees. Please remember that the file is offered as a convenience -- it is the cacher's responsibility to know how to import the file into their smartphone application. (From our experience, the classic Geocaching App does not support the importing of files.)

The Crosswinds Cache Crew pledge to develop and maintain quality and interesting geocaches in the Marsh consistent with Geocaching and Wayne County Parks rules and permit process.  For more information on the Cache Crew and our endeavors, please visit us on the web at http://www.crosswindscaching.com and on social media.
