FYC - Menokin Plantation Traditional Geocache

The Chesapeake Bay, the great rivers that feed it, and the vast landscapes surrounding them are at the center of our nation’s story. The Find Your Chesapeake (FYC) GeoTour launched June 9, 2018 with over 60 caches within Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania. and Delaware. A trackable geocoin will be awarded to the first 400 geocachers, while supplies last, for locating at least 20 FYC caches. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must download a passport from the Find Your Chesapeake GeoTour website. Geocachers must find and log at least 20 finds, record the code word from each cache on their passport. After discovering the 20 required caches, geocachers may have their passports validated via mail at the National Park Service, Chesapeake Bay Office located at 410 Severn Ave, Suite 314, Annapolis, MD 21403. Please refer to the passport for complete validation instructions.

Participating in the FYC GeoTour is fun and we hope that many people join in. However, it is not a requirement for logging your find on this cache once you find the container.

Menokin is located along the shoreline of Cat Point Creek, a pristine tributary of the Rappahannock River. Cat Point Creek is about 20 miles long and consists of 46,800 acres of farms, towns, streams, millponds, and wetlands. Since around 1300, the Rappahannock Indians have occupied the land Menokin sits on. The unique geographical shape of Menokin provides a secluded yet accessible home for the Rappahannock Indians. It is surrounded by thick and tall woods on a plateau, providing a great view of the river. It also sit at the joining of three waterways, providing access for transportation and natural resources. Imagine yourself here 700 years ago and think about the techniques you would use to protect your tribe.

The property to Menokin is open from 7am to 7pm when the gates are open. The Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 12 noon to 4pm. The Visitor Center is closed on Sunday and Monday. Menokin is closed for most National Holidays and may be closed for special event. Please check their calendar online.
