The Church
St Andrew’s Church in the small hamlet of Bridge Sollars is a small Norman gem with 13th Century and 14th Century additions. It is Grade 1 listed with stone carvings of a dragon and monster’s head on either side of the 12th Century porch doorway that are fine examples of the Herefordshire School of Carving. The east window contains images of Jesus and five saints, work by Powell in 1871. The nave was converted to be used as a Community Centre in 2011 and this has given the building a new lease of life in the 21st Century.
Access
Parking is off the road in a designated area of the farmyard opposite that is marked as Private Parking for the use of the Church and Community Hall. PLEASE DO NOT block the access to the property and field adjacent to the Church. There are clear signs directing you to the appropriate parking area and pedestrian gated access to the lane that is directly opposite St Andrews. Please use the convex mirrors when crossing to the Church to ensure your safety.
The Settlement
Bridge Sollars is 6.2 miles west of Hereford, on the River Wye and consists of 12 households. Bridge Sollars takes its name from the surnames of a family connected with the parish. Simon de Brugge (b. 1272) married Mary Solers c.1297.
The first bridge was built at Bridge Sollars in 1896. Previously there had been a ferry system for crossing the river, and the nearest bridge was at Hereford. This bridge was replaced in 2004.
