The name is based upon an old story about the night a UFO landed in a little pond right here in Carbondale.
In November of 1974 two young boys phoned the police claiming that they saw a UFO fly out of the sky and crash into a small pond. When the police arrived they saw a glowing light in the pond that "seemed to move and pulse". The pond glowed throughout the entire night. In the morning a diver went into the pond and retrieved a lantern and the whole thing was declared a hoax. There are rumors that a large object was removed from the site under a tarp.
We used to have a cache at the pond but a large construction project closed it down. You can see some of the construction from where you stand now. If it happened this would have been a great spot to see the UFO land as the actual pond is just out of sight. This highway was not here at the time though. There were also many call ins that night to the police from people seeing strange lights in the sky.
