NYC Subway Series: Abandoned 18th Street Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

SpinOnGreen: Unfortunately, with us being out of the area to place a replacement cache and this cache continuing to be muggled, we have decided to archive it to free up the spot for another. We are interested to see what future owners will do with the location.

NYC Subway Series: Abandoned 18th Street
The New York City Subway is an iconic part of our lives here in the Big Apple, and several great geocaches have been placed in its honor. And although the MTA, the organization behind it all, has united the city with many its subway lines and its colorful map, it was not always this way.

Before 1940, there were three main subway companies that controlled the mass transportation that we know today by its colorful shapes, letters, and numbers. The IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit Company,) the BMT (Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation,) and the city-run IND (Independent Rapid Transit Railroad.) While the BMT and IND both ran many key services, the IRT ran the Lexington Avenue Line, the focus of this cache.
When it opened in 1904, the 18th Street Station was magnificent... "Hold on," the locals are saying, "there is no 18th Street Station!" Well, not anymore.

The 18th Street Station served IRT trains starting in October 1904. But, when what was then the Board of Transportation decided to extend platforms to accommodate ten cars instead of the previous five, the 18th Street Station became too close to its neighbors 14th and 23rd. So the decision came into action, and the 18th Street Station was shut down, abandoned. It is certainly a relic of the past, but it can still be seen today by riding past it and looking out the window in a downtown (6) train from 23rd Street or an uptown (6) from 14th. In addition, as you stand at GZ, you are actually directly on top of what would have been the downtown side of the station. While the area doesn't look like it could be home to a subway station, it actually used to be!
Finding the cache
  1. The cache is closer to the street than the store. The geocache is not in a store window, on the wall, etc.
  2. Difficulty 1.5 because of muggles.

Magnetic NANO. Please be sure to use stealth and replace exactly as you found. BYOP. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

Kudos to JordsAU for the FTF on Dec 6, 2017!
