The following historical notes have been taken from the information leaflet that is available inside the church. West Hendred Parish is part of the Wantage Downs Benefice, a group of three parishes with four churches which share one rector. This church is a Grade 1 listed building and was built on the site of a spring that still flows under the building today. The parish was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was valued at £10 and had a 9th century wooden church. This was almost entirely rebuilt in the 14th century, during the reign of Richard II, and this is the building that still stands here.
Interesting features inside include numerous panes of 600 year old stained glass, medieval pews, remnants of wall decorations and encaustic tiles in the aisle. The tower is hung with six bells, the oldest of which was cast in 1623 and bears the inscription, "Prayes ye the Lord". The following picture of the church is credited to Andrew Mathewson.
