TLC Throop Mill Traditional Geocache

One of the main characteristics of modern day Throop is the watermill referred to as “Throop Mill”. The watermill in Throop village has been present in some regard from the 12th century passing through various ownership's including monks from Quarr Abbey and was mentioned in the Domesday Book.

The mill ceased operating in 1974, but it was not until 1981 that the mill was closed down when its last miller Cecil Biles (known to every one as ‘Cis’) died. Since the time of his death the mill has been empty.

Cis, who loved the mill, worked in it for the greater part of his life. After spending 52 years there his last wish was that he should die at the mill and to be carried out by his sons. That is what happened, but as he was an exceptionally well-built man and died on the top floor of four, whilst painting the window sills, it was not an easy wish to grant.

It has often been said that the mill is haunted by the monks and sometimes tormented children with no faces. Their laughter and cries are said to fill the cold night air with a chilling fear, not surprisingly, despite many attempts to reopen, the mill remains closed to the public.
