GinGin loves to learn about any of the great Virginia State Parks he visits either for the day or overnight. From the helpful information you can learn on-line, brochures and information from Park Staff to reading informative signs posted throughout the park, GinGin is always learning more and more with each trip he makes. GinGin was captivated by Shot Tower Historic State Park. It is managed by the New River Trail State Park.
The Shot Tower Historic State Park was constructed over a seven year period, being completed in 1807. It was known as the Jackson Ferry Shot Tower and is 75 feet in height, with a fortress like appearance. It walls are made of limestone and are 2.5 feet in thickness. From the top, lead would be heated, poured through difference sieves producing shot of differing sizes. From there, the lead would fall a total of 150 feet (75 feet being the Tower and an additional 75 feet below surface) to a large kettle of water thought to act as a cushion. It was felt that the fall, itself, would help with molding the round shot. After being collected from an access tunnel near the river, the shot was sorted for size.
The tower was eventually donated in 1968 to the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is believed that the shape of Shot Tower is the only one of it's particular design in the world.
If you are driving, please park your vehicle in the parking lot near Shot Tower.
The cache you will be looking for is a small bison tube dangling just above the rock. Have had integrity issues with the rock container, so you have another option on what log you want to sign. You do NOT need to sign both, just one. You will need to bring your own pen. Please do not disturb any vegetation or wildlife that may be in the area. This should be a quick one to locate. Use the hint for a clue. Please leave cache is original location.
