Geocache Description – 2. Fallaway Hill

The Story

After Timmy's escapades in the wood, the children then climb Fallaway Hill to eat their lunch. Julian describes the hill by saying "it falls away steeply and we've got a marvellous view".

The Cache

If you approach this cache from the suggested parking, you will pass by Wistman's wood, an ancient stunted oakwood which is practically impenetrable due to the enormous boulders through which the trees grow but you can imagine a dog like Timmy getting stuck between those boulders. Afterwards you could climb Longaford Tor from where the views over Dartmoor, like Fallaway Hill, are spectacular on a clear day.

A walk including Longaford Tor from the suggested parking is less than 5 miles and remains at least half a mile away from Merrivale Firing Range, which is to the West.

Points of Interest

Only two miles to the North West lie Conies Down and Tor, whose names are also associated with the old English term for rabbits! The way to these places is indistinct and passes through the Merrivale Firing Range. If you wish to go that way you should have excellent map skills and check the days of live firing at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dartmoor-firing-programme
