Geocache Description:

Since the Greyfriars Bobby Traditional was archived, thought I'd make this cache to remember the dedication of the dog who stayed loyal to his master, even after death. BYOP!

Greyfriar's Bobby Statue

The posted coordinates will take you to the statue of the dog himself. The owner, John Gray (also known as Auld Jock) was a night watchman for the Edinburgh Police Force, and not wanting to be alone on his shifts, decided to take on a partner. He got a Skye Terrier 'watchdog' called Bobby, and they went everywhere together, no matter the weather over the years, before John came down with tuberculosis, and the owner died 15th Feb. 1858. John Gray was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, with Bobby leading the way at the head of the funeral procession, and he refused to leave his masters side - no matter the weather.

Bobby refused to be lured away from the grave, and this made an impact on the residents of Edinburgh. The locals all chipped in and built a shelter for Bobby so he could keep watch over his master Auld Jock. This went on for 14 years, where Bobby only left his masters grave only for food - using the One O'Clock Gun as his signal to go and get his food literally like clockwork everyday. News of Bobby spread, and people came to see the loyal dog as he went out on his midday meal run. Things nearly ended badly for him in 1867 when a new bye-law came in stating all dogs are required to have a license in the city, or be destroyed. Facing being put down, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Sir William Chambers paid for the license and also got him a collar (which can still be seen at the Museum of Edinburgh - there's a map next to the statue if you're interested in seeing it).

Alas, Bobby eventually passed away in 1872, aged 16. He is also buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard with a lovely red granite headstone, which was unveiled by the Duke of Gloucester back in 1981.

Anyway back to the cache:

The cache can be found at N55 56.ABC W003 11.DEF.

To find the cache, you need to visit the Statue of Bobby, and the Graves in the waypoints and answer the following questions:

  1. At the base of Bobby's statue is a plaque, look for the 2nd top line, and look for the word after "Affectionate" and count the letters of the word to = A.
  2. Next head to Bobby's grave itself and look for the date the Duke of Gloucester unveiled the headstone. Look for the bit of the date (like the 20th, 21st, 31st, etc) and the 2nd digit = B.
  3. Nearby, to the right, on the way to John Gray's grave is a big blue sign with a map of the Kirkyard and some information about John Gray on the bottom. Add the 2 digits of John Gray's age together to = C.
  4. Next, head to the Grave of John Gray, and to the right of it, you'll see a "friend to Bobby"'s grave there. To get D, look for the 2nd digit of the date and minus the 1st digit from it to = D.
  5. To get E, count the amount of the letter B's you see on the Grave (including the name Bobby) to = E.
  6. To get F, look for the last digit of the date and half it to = F.

Checksum:

  • North - 20
  • West - 15

When approaching the final, you might want to use stealth as it's at a junction (maybe use the shoelace method). Remember to BYOP and maybe tweezers and replace out of sight.
