Geocache Description:

This EarthCache brings you to a limestone site located on Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, South Kuta). Please note that there will likely be a small charge for access, access may be altered during festivals and on occasions when the sea is very rough, the boardwalk may be closed and access to the EC site impossible. See below for logging requirements when boardwalk is closed.

EarthCache Description

The outcrops you see at the EarthCache site are the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene (12 to 4 million years ago) Selatan Formation which is predominately limestone. It was formed in a sedimentation basin (below current sea level) which was subsequently uplifted due the sinking of the oceanic floors of the Indian Ocean-Australian Plate under the rigid Eurasian plate of the Indonesian archipelago. This causes the region to be tectonically active and experience frequent earthquakes resulting in uplifts.

At the EarthCache site you will study the characteristics of the Selatan Formation limestone exposed here.

How to claim this EarthCache?

1. From the platform, examine the limestone outcrops and take the GPS elevation.

2. Send us an email with the text "Bali Limestone" on the subject line, and answers to the following questions.

A. What is your GPS elevation (ELEV) in meters?
B. Assuming the uplift started 4 million years ago, from current sea level, what would be the rate of uplift of the Selatan Formation at this locality? ELEV x 1,000 mm / 4 million years. Unit in mm/yr.
C. What is the texture of the limestone? Pick one of the following:
i) Sharp and pointed
ii) Scalloped (small bowl like texture)
iii) Layered
iv) Massive (no texture)
D. What caused this texture?
E. Is the limestone fossiliferous (contain fossils)? If it is, does it contain (choose one or more):
i) Corals
ii) Clams
iii) Gastropods (snails)
iv) The limestone is not fossiliferous
F. If it is not fossiliferous, explain why.

3. In the event you are not allowed to access the site, read the listing and make your best guess for the answers that you can attempt.

4. When logging, include at least one (compulsory) photo as proof of your visit.*

*Geocaching and Earth-caching are meant to be a fun family experience to introduce interesting and unique locations such as this one. It is not intended to be intimidating and your answers do not need to be 100% correct but we appreciate you at least putting in some effort with your answers, log and accompanying photos. Flexibility on logging requirements can only be applied if it can be established that you have actually taken the time to visit the site.
