Πώς προέκυψε η ονομασία «Λευκός Πύργος»;
The White Tower
The White Tower of Thessaloniki is a fortification building. It was probably built between 1450-1470 by the Ottomans. It is the landmark of Thessaloniki and has been saved from the demolished Ottoman fortification of the city. The tower replaced the Byzantine fortification of the 12th century and then it was used as a guard lodge of the Turkish soldiers (called Jenitsaroi) as well as a prison of death.
Today it operates as a museum and is one of the most famous building-symbols of cities in Greece. It is a six floor building. Its height is 34 meters and its perimeter is 70 meters. It has been suggested that the architect of the Tower was the renowned Mimar Sinan, based on similarity to the Tower in Avlona, Albania.
The White Tower has changed names and uses from time to time. At first it was called "Tower of the Leo", according to a Turkish inscription which was written at the entrance of the outer enclosure. The view of the Tower, however, was often painted with blood as there were many victims because of the Ottoman torturers, as well as executions of the prisoners from the Janitsaries (Turkish soldiers). During that time until the end of the 19th century, the Tower was called "The Tower of Blood".
Since the liberation of Thessaloniki in 1912 the Tower belongs to the Greek state having the Greek flag on its top.
How did the name "White Tower" emerge?
