Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Church Micro Series. It is located at the Saint Peter's church in Stapehill, Burton upon Trent. Your own pen would be helpful, but I have provided a little pencil for now.

For this cache you're looking for a micro magnetic container. Please make sure this lid has clicked shut and make sure that the cache is correctly replaced. There is a short walk around the area including Stapenhill Gardens, the site of the former Stapenhill House, which can be accessed via a footbridge over St Peter's Bridge. You can also walk along the river from Stapenhill Gardens to an area called The Hollows which is a firm favourite for local dog walkers.

​History
The fact that Stapenhill church is dedicated to Saint Peter suggests that it may have foundation that preceeded the conquest since this dedication was most common in the Anglo-Saxon period. It is recorded that a plot of land once belonging to a chaplain in Brizlincote was assigned to the chamberlain of Burton abbey in 1326 which suggests a chapel there too. All came under the Stapenhill parish and were to be served by Saint Peter’s. Nothing, unfortuantely, survives of the medieval church of St. Peter, but an 18th-century drawing shows a building whose exterior was mainly of 13th-century date with a chancel, nave, and two-stage west tower with crenellated parapet.
