Geocache Description:

A mystery for progressive geocachers.

Progressive rock is a loosely defined subgenre of rock music that emerged in the late 60s. The 60s' pop music was about short, radio-friendly songs with relatively simple structures and sing-along choruses. During 1966-1967 groundbreaking psychedelia-influenced artists such as the Beatles or the Beach Boys published albums that did not just contain independent songs but which had a common concept from the beginning to the end. Style and length varied from a song to another, thus giving the albums a distinctive feel. The progressive artists borrowed unconventional instruments, melodies, rhythms and composition practices from other musical styles such as classical music, folk and jazz. The improvements in recording and production techniques made these ambitious projects possible.

From this background the progressive rock evolved. Artists like the Nice, Arthur Brown and Moody Blues recorded albums in the late 60s that could be described as "progressive". But as 60s turned to 70s, many new bands had started to record music that no longer has any resemblance to the 60s pop at all. Loooong songs, innovative use of instruments, complex song arrangements and unorthodox time signatures were the key ingredients of the new musical genre. The shows of the prog rock artists to were taken to the next level with pretentious stage sets, overblown costumes and nonsensical, often fantasy lyrics. As a result, some prog bands were among the most famous rock acts in the Western world during the early 70s. The golden era of the prog rock lasted until the mid-70s, when the arrival of punk among other things made prog rock suddenly obsolete and uncool. Some of the prog rockers simply disappeared, while some others found new ways of creating music. The influence of these great artists can still be heard in the work of many contemporary artists.

Now it's time for you to expand your mind and find out the coordinates to the prog rock cache by solving the following riddles:

  • A - the band: named after blues musicians
  • B - the album: number palindrome
  • C - the song: intro with piano (English notation): Bb5-Bb4-D5-F5 Bb5-Bb4-D5-F5 | G5-Bb4-Eb5 F5-Bb4-D5 G5-Bb4-Eb5 F5-Bb4-D5 E5-C5-G5-E5 | C6-C5-F5-A5 D6-D5-F5-Bb5 | Db6-Db5-F5 C6-C5-F5 Bb5-Bb4-Eb5 Bb5-Gb5-C6-Ab5 ...
  • D - the artist: PhD who played with three of the greatest prog rock bands

Calculate the following values:

  • XXX = (50*A + 70*B + 50*C + 70*D) modulo 1000
  • YYY = (80*A + 90*B + 70*C + 90*D - 2) modulo 1000

The cache is in the coordinates N60 11.XXX E24 43.YYY. There is no need to visit the bogus point unless you like standing in a ditch. The cache can be approached most easily from the north.

The cache has a pen and can contain small travellers.

Bonus cache: The caches of my three music mysteries contain numeric codes X, Y and Z. You need the values to be able to find the bonus cache. The caches are this one (Z), Synth-pop mystery (Y) and Post-punk mystery (X). If you already have found some of these caches but don't have the codes, just ask me and I'll send them to you. (I added the codes to the log books of the caches 10.9.2017.)
