[EN] Laima Clock is located in the heart of Riga old town, near Riga canal and opposite the monument of Freedom. If it’s not a rainy day, in the evening, you will see that there are many people standing around this clock. These people are meeting somebody here. It’s one of the most traditional meeting points for Rigas` residents and city guests. Around this place people are waiting, then hugging, laughing, smiling and kissing. This place perhaps is one of the most positive and sentimental places in Riga.
First clock in Riga was installed in the 14th century in the tower of St. Peter Church. At that time the clock was a sign of prosperity and mostly they were installed in Churches, city councils and in a House of Blackheads. Laima Clock was built in 1924. Initially simple dial on metal legs was named Veckalna clock, under the name of Social Democrat council member Veckalns, who initialized the construction of the clock. The main purpose of the clock was to inform people about the time so they could come to work on time. In thirties on the leg of the clock there was written a name “Riegert”. It was the first time when the clock was used for media purposes.
The name “Laima” appeared in 1936. At that time the biggest Latvian sweets factory “Laima” wrote its name on the leg of the clock in a beautiful art deco style. „Laimas” - in Latvian language means “Happiness”. After the WWII the clock was used as a political informational board. For the last time, the clock was renovated in 1999 by the same sweets factory “Laima”. In 2007 and 2009 some cosmetic decorations were made. In 2017, the factory "Laima" opened the renewed "Laima" clock in honor of the 100th century in Latvia, giving it a new look and musical elements.
Today the historically important Laima Clock is not just one of the most popular meeting points, but also one of the most popular souvenirs in Riga. “Laima” time to time arranges events during which people are trying to beet a new meeting record. On May 2010, “Laima” manufactory organized a celebration of “Love minute” where 2.500 people gathered near Laima Clock. At third of May the air around the clock was charged with love and positive feelings, people were letting red colour balloons, kissing each other and wishing the very best in life. That was fixed as a new meeting record near the Laima Clock.
