Le Château d'Epinal

Le château d'Épinal et les ruines de l'ancienne forteresse dominent la ville d'Épinal et la vallée de la Moselle à 387 m d'altitude.
Il a été construit par l’évêque de Metz, Jacques de Lorraine, vers le milieu du XIIIe siècle, succédant alors à une première forteresse de l’an mil qui fut avec Fontenoy-le-Château et Remiremont les premières forteresses des Vosges du sud.
Perché sur une crête rocheuse, il se présente comme une enceinte polygonale pourvue d'un puissant donjon résidentiel et d'une grande citerne à corps filtrant. Les restes du logis seigneurial ainsi que d'autres bâtiments (arsenal, logis du capitaine, four, chapelle…) ont été mis au jour durant la fouille du château pendant les années 1980.
Agrandi et adapté à l’artillerie par les ducs de Lorraine au début du XVIe siècle, le château a été détruit par les troupes de Louis XIV en 1670. Cet ensemble fortifié médiéval est classé monument historique depuis 1992.

Mais attention voilà comment justifier votre visite :
Il vous faudra vous prendre en photo ou prendre votre GPS (Montrer son visage est optionnel pour garantir la confidentialité de chacun) avec le château derrière vous (voir vue sur l'image en dessous). Optionnel : L'idéal serait de vous déguiser avec au moins deux accessoires (Perruques, Lunettes fun, Maquillages, Nez de clown, Chapeaux originaux etc...). Jouez le jeu !

The castle of Epinal and the ruins of the ancient fortress dominate the town of Epinal and the Moselle Valley at 387 m altitude.
It was built by the Bishop of Metz, Jacques of Lorraine, in the middle of the 13th century, then succeeding in a first fortress of the year Mil, which was with Fontenoy-le-Château and Remiremont the first fortresses of the southern Vosges.
Perched on a rocky ridge, it presents itself as a polygonal enclosure with a powerful residential dungeon and a large filter-body cistern. The remains of the Seigneurial house as well as other buildings (Arsenal, Captain's home, Furnace, chapel ...) were excavated during the search of the castle during the 1980 years.
Enlarged and adapted to artillery by the Dukes of Lorraine in the early 16th century, the castle was destroyed by the troops of Louis XIV in 1670. This medieval fortified ensemble has been classified as a historical monument since 1992.

- November to February : 8 am-5 pm
- March and October : 7.30-18.00
- April to September : 7.30 am-8.00 pm
- May to August : 7.30 am-8.00 pm
But be careful how to justify your visit :
You will need to take a picture or take your GPS (show your face is optional to guarantee everyone's privacy) with the castle behind you (see picture view below). Optional: The ideal would be to disguise yourself with at least two accessories (wigs, fun glasses, make-up, clown nose, original hats etc...). Play the game !
