When the tide goes out at Berrow sands the bones of a long dead ship Norwegian Barque SS Nornen are visible here. Therefore this cache is only accessible at LOW tide so please check tide times.
In March 1897 a howling south westerly gale swept up the Bristol Channel bringing with it high seas, driving snow and sleet. The SS Nornen found its self driven to Berrow mud flats, and despite the crews efforts to save her they were fighting a losing battle. When the mists cleared on 3rd March the crippled ship was spotted off Gore sands.
Down the ramp to her aid went the Burnham lifeboat, the John Godrey Morris. The crew of 10 oarsmen battled through the high seas and winds and managed to get alongside the helpless ship, just as she was being driven onto the sands. The ships crew of ten, together with their dog were taken off by the lifeboat and landed safely at Burnham at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The rescue is recorded on the honours board of rescues made by the three lifeboats at Burnham during the period from 1867 to 1930 which stands at the Burnham RNLI station.
Around the wreck the sand/mud can be very soft so wellies are a good idea.
To claim this find you need to physically visit this cache to log it. Post a photo of yourself at the wreck, or if you prefer a photo of your GPS at the wreck. Also answer the following two questions:-
1) how many yellow buoys surround the wreck
2) what is the length of the wreck in metres (estimate)
