Historia

Det medeltida Torpa

Det första Stenhuset uppfördes omkring år 1470 av riksrådet Arvid Knutsson. De förmögna nya borgherrarna hade ekonomiska intressen i handel med boskap och livsmedel genom Ätrans och Viskans dalgångar. I ett pergamentbrev daterat Vadstena 9/2 1513 omtalas Stenhuset uppå Torpa gård, den äldsta arkivaliska uppgift som finns att tillgå. Slutet av 1400-talet var också en orolig tid. Förutom de ständiga danska krigshoten ägde flera bondeuppror rum i bygden. Den medeltida byggnaden på Torpa fungerade både som försvars och handelsborg.

Renässansslottet

På 1500-talet beboddes Torpa av riksrådet Gustav Olofsson Stenbock. Genom sin hustru, Brita Eriksdotter Leijonhufvud var han svåger med den dåvarande kungen Gustav Vasa. År 1552 när kungen blivit änkling för andra gången blev denne efter ett besök på Torpa blixtförälskad i den blott 16 år gamla Katarina Stenbock , dotter till Gustav Olofsson och Brita Leijonhufvud. Det sägs att Katarina sprang ut i trädgården och gömde sig när hon fick höra kungens verkliga orsak till besöket. Katarina kom att bli kungens tredje och sista gemål. Under 1500-talets senare del gjordes det också en omfattande tillbyggnad och modernisering av slottet. Bland annat byggdes det en fjärde våning, trapptornet tillkom, taken höjdes och salarna dekorerades med vackra målningar.

1600-talet

1600-talets första hälft representerar glansperioden i Torpas historia. Den nya stormaktstiden kommer sedan med krav på komfort och elegans. Den dåvarande slottsherren Gustav Otto Stenbock brydde sig inte om att förändra det gamla slottet, utan löste sin bostadsfråga genom att uppföra ett helt nytt hus av timmer. Slottet användes nu endast i representationssyfte. De sista inredningsarbeten som gjordes i Torpa Stenhus var i slottskapellet. Detta skedde efter Gustav Otto Stenbocks död, då hans hustru Christina Katarina de la Gardie lät uppföra ett kapell i karolinsk barockstil. Kapellet stod klart att invigas år 1699.

Slottet under senare århundranden

Från den Stenbockska ätten övergick Torpa år 1765 genom arv till ätten Sjöblad och därefter, år 1787 till ätten Sparre. År 1927 tillföll gården Ebba Marianne Charlotte Storckenfelt, gift med kammarherren Fritz Adolf Zethelius. Det är deras sonson Pehr Zethelius som äger och driver Torpa gård idag. 1900-2000-talet har varit en återställandets tid där familjen Zethelius och framförallt Pehr har lagt ner stor omsorg och stora kostnader på att vårda och återställa slottet och dess omgivningar.

Grå frun

Grå frun sägs ha varit en dotter till en av borgens herrar för länge sedan. Hon skall ha blivit förälskad i en av fångarna som fadern tagit med hem från Danmark. När fadern fick veta detta dödade han fången varvid dottern blev sjuk av sorg och dog inom kort. Hon har därefter inte fått någon ro utan irrar nu omkring i slottets salar.

De vita hästarna

Varje gång en ägare till Torpa är nära sin egen bortgång sägs personen se fyra vita hästar som drar en ståtlig vagn. De drar vagnen fram till stenhuset där de stannar en stund, varefter de långsamt kör bort igen.

Den inmurade flickan

Långt tillbaka i tiden bodde en riddare på Torpa. Denne hade två döttrar, varav den ena varit på en resa till Danmark. När hon kom hem därifrån berättade hon att pesten brutit ut i Danmark. Fadern lät då mura in henne levande i ett rum för att förhindra att pesten spred sig. Flickan sägs inte ha fått någon ro utan spökar i slottet.

Lille Gustav Stenbock

Gustaf Otto Stenbocks förstfödde son som under tragistka omständigheter drunknade i brunnen bara tre år gammal. Sedan dess vandrar denna lille pojke i Torpa Stenhus stora salar. Många besökare, framförallt damer påstår sig se en liten blek pojke i gammaldags kläder.

Greve Gustaf Otto Stenbock

Även Gustavs far lär spöka i slottet. I Kungssalen finns ett stort porträtt av greven. Om man ställer sig under detta porträtt vid midnatt och ropar på den honom skall enligt sägen slottet börja skaka så våldsamt att ingen kan stå upprätt ” Alla skola falla till golvet”.

Kuriosa

Nuvarande ägarfamiljen Zethelius är i rakt nedstigande led släkt med Arvid Knutsson som byggde stenhuset på 1400-talet. Huset har vandrat ömsom på svärdsidan och spinnsidan i släkten, därav släktskapet med Leijonhuvud & Stenbock. Det är dessutom det enda privatägda “slottet” i Sverige som gått i arv i samma familj sedan uppförandet på medeltiden.

History

The Midieval Torpa

The first stone house was built around 1470 by the Swedish National Council Arvid Knutsson. The wealthy new burghers had economic interests in trade in livestock and food through the valleys of Ätrans and Viskan. In a parchment letter dated Vadstena 9/2 1513, the stone house is mentioned on Torpa farm, the oldest archival task available. The end of the 1500th century was also an anxious time. In addition to the constant Danish war threats, several peasant rebels taking place in the area. The medieval building at Torpa served as a defense and trading castle.

Renaissance castle

In the 16th century, Torpa was inhabited by the Swedish National Council Gustav Olofsson Stenbock. Through his wife, Brita Eriksdotter Leijonhufvud, he was brother in law with the King Gustav Vasa. In 1552, when the king became widower for the second time, after a visit to Torpa, he fell in love with the 16-year-old Katarina Stenbock, daughter of Gustav Olofsson and Brita Leijonhufvud. It is said that Katarina ran out into the garden and hid when she heard the king's real reason for the visit. Katarina came to be the king's third and final wife. In the latter part of the 16th century, a major extension and modernization of the castle was also made. Among other things, a fourth floor was built, the stair tower was added, the roof was raised and the halls were decorated with beautiful paintings.

1700 century

The first half of the 17th century represents the glory period in Torpa's history. The new superpower then comes with the demands of comfort and elegance. The then castle lord Gustav Otto Stenbock did not care about changing the old castle, but solved his housing question by constructing a whole new house of timber. The castle was now used for representation purposes only. The last interior work done in Torpa Stenhus was in the castle chapel. This happened after Gustav Otto Stenbock's death when his wife, Christina Katarina de la Gardie, created a chapel in the Carolian Baroque style. The chapel was ready to be opened in 1699.

The castle in recent centuries

From the Stenbock monastery, Torpa passed over in 1765 by inheritance to the dynasty Sjöblad and then, in 1787 to the dynasty Sparre. In 1927 the farm went to Ebba Marianne Charlotte Storckenfelt, married to Chamberlain Fritz Adolf Zethelius. It is their grandson, Pehr Zethelius, who owns and operates Torpa farm today. The 1900-2000 century has been a time of restoration where the Zethelius family and above all Pehr have put great care and big costs to restoration of the castle and its surroundings.

Gray lady

Gray lady is said to have been a daughter of one of the castle gentlemen long ago. She must have fallen in love with one of the prisoners whom the father brought home from Denmark. When the father was told this, he killed the prisoner, the daughter being sick of sadness and shortly afterwards. After that she has not received any rest but is now irradiating around the palace's halls.

The white horses

Every time an owner of Torpa is close to his own passing, the person is said to see four white horses pulling a stately wagon. They pull the wagon to the stone house where they stay for a while, then they slowly drive away again.

The walled in girl

Far back in time, a knight lived at Torpa. This one had two daughters, one of whom had been on a trip to Denmark. When she came home, she told her that the plague broke out in Denmark. The father then let her live in a room to prevent the plague from spreading. The girl is said to have received no peace without ghosts in the castle.

Little Gustav Stenbock

Gustaf Otto Stenbock's firstborn son who, under tragic circumstances, drowned in the well just three years old. Since then, this little boy in Torpa Stenhus walks large halls. Many visitors, especially ladies claim to see a little pale boy in old-fashioned clothes.

Count Gustaf Otto Stenbock

Even Gustav's father learns to haunt the castle. In the Kungssalen there is a large portrait of the Count. If you stand under this portrait at midnight calling on him he should say, the castle begins to shake so violently that no one can stand upright "Everybody will fall to the floor".

Curiosities

The current owner the family Zethelius is in straight descendants to Arvid Knutsson who built the stone house in the 1500 century. The house has been wandering on the male side and the female side of the family, hence the familyhood with Leijonhuvud & Stenbock. It is also the only privately-owned "castle" in Sweden that has been inherited in the same family since its construction in the Middle Ages.
