The Biloxi Lighthouse was built in 1848 and is the only lighthouse in the United States to stand in the middle of a four-lane highway. It is also one of the first cast-iron lighthouses in the south. This lighthouse has withstood many storms and is one of the few structures that survived Hurricane Katrina. This steadfast beacon is reported to be the most photographed landmark on all the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The location of this Lighthouse makes it susceptible to its strongest opponent—Mother Nature. Two of the deadliest hurricanes in Gulf Coast history, Camille (1969) and Katrina (2005), devastated the Gulf Coast, sparing little in their paths. Katrina’s record-breaking storm surge crested at 27.8 feet above mean sea level. It destroyed nearly the entire city, but the lighthouse remained standing ...like a resolute sentry.
From its view at forty-five feet (from base to lantern) it has seen the best and worst of Mother Nature and humanity. But much like Biloxi and those who call it home, it has weathered the storm and continues to shine, perhaps a little brighter for coming through it all.
It is the city’s signature landmark and has become a post-Katrina symbol of the city’s resolve and resilience.
To prove your visit to this virtual cache location you will need to post a photo of you at the lighthouse with proof of date. Suggestions of proof of date include gas/restaurant receipts with the date on it,newspapers, the date on your gpsr/cellphone,or simply write the date on a piece of paper. Alternately ; since the lighthouse has a webcam i will accept a webcam photo image. Check the photo gallery for optimal webcam positioning .You should be facing the camera directly as possible if you choose this method.
