Take a stroll down the Greenbelt Path (paved bicycle path) that was once train tracks serving the South Portland Shipbuilding industry. Stop at the only remaining evidence that trains once ruled the rails here and snap a photo while you enjoy the view of Portland across the Casco Bay.
Known as the Eastern Route to the now defunct Boston and Maine Railroad, this bike path was one train tracks connecting the New England Shipbuilding Corporation which built 266 ships for World War II along the southern shore of the Fore River Estuary to Yard 3 owned by the Portland Terminal Company. Yard 3 still operates to this day on the other side of the chain link fence near the gas tanks where the bike path crosses Broadway a few miles to the West before the path heads South. We have included a map of all the tracks and yards for your convenience in the gallery.
