Het Sint-Janshospitaal is een van de oudst bewaarde hospitaalgebouwen van Europa. In het museum kom je meer te weten over het vroegere hospitaalleven en hoe de ziekenzalen er toen uit zagen. Meubels, schilderijen, beelden, zilverwerk en tinnen voorwerpen zijn de stille getuigen van eeuwenlange zieken- en zielszorg in dit hospitaal. Uniek is ook het dakgebinte van het gebouw, dat tot de oudste en meest monumentale van Europa behoort. Vergeet zeker ook niet een bezoek te brengen aan de oude apotheek en de kruidentuinen. In de hospitaalkapel gaat alle aandacht naar de werken van de bekendste der Vlaamse Primitieven: Hans Memling. Deze schilder leefde en werkte in de 15de eeuw in Brugge en creëerde er zijn belangrijkste meesterwerken, zoals het beroemde Ursulaschrijn, voor het Sint-Janshospitaal.
Geschiedenis : in de oude ziekenzaal worden vanaf de 12e tot midden 19e eeuw zieken opgevangen. Aanvankelijk kan al wie voedsel of een bed nodig heeft er terecht. De medische kennis van de kloosterzusters is echter miniem en ze wijden zich vooral aan ‘zielzorg’. Geneesheiligen op schilderijen en sculpturen, reliekhouders en een sfeervolle kapel wijzen op levendige devotie. In de 19e eeuw verhuist het ziekenhuis naar een vlakbij gelegen neogotisch gebouw in felrode baksteen, waar zieken nog tot 1978 terecht kunnen.

(EN) Saint-John's Hospital .
Saint-John's Hospital is one of the oldest preserved hospital buildings in Europe. In the museum, you can learn more about hospital life in the past and how the wards would have looked then. Furniture, paintings, sculptures, silverware, and pewterware are the silent witnesses of the care for bodies and souls that took place in this hospital through the centuries. The building’s supporting framework is also unique and is one of the oldest and largest in Europe. The old apothecary’s and herb garden is also well worth a visit. In the hospital chapel, the focus is all on the work of the most famous of the Flemish Primitives: Hans Memling. This painter lived and worked in Bruges in the 15th century and created his most important masterpieces here, including the famous Shrine of St Ursula, which was painted specifically for Sint-Janshospitaal.
History : The old infirmary took patients in from the 12th to the middle of the 19th century. Initially anyone in need of food or a bed could come here. The nuns, however, had limited medical knowledge and devoted themselves mainly to the care of the soul. Paintings and sculptures of healing saints, reliquaries, and an atmospheric chapel bear witness to a strong faith. In the 19th century the hospital moved to a nearby neo-gothic building of bright red brick, where patients could go until 1978.
