Suomenlinna on Helsingin edustalla sijaitseva merilinnoitus. Historiallisena muistomerkkinä ja nähtävyytenä sen kulttuurillinen arvo on merkittävä, ja se on vahva osa Helsingin identiteettiä. Suomenlinnan rakennustyöt aloitettiin vuonna 1748 ja se liitettiin vuonna 1991 UNESCOn maailmanperintöluetteloon.
Kuninkaanportti
Annetut koordinaatit tuovat sinut Kuninkaanportille. Se on Suomenlinnan eteläisimmällä saarella Kustaanmiekan salmen edustalla sijaitseva porttirakennus ja linnoituksen alkuperäinen pääsisäänkäynti. Sitä pidetään yleisesti yhtenä Suomenlinnan tunnusmerkeistä. Portti rakennettiin alun perin 1753–1754 paikalle, jolle silloinen Ruotsin kuningas Aadolf Fredrik oli kiinnittänyt laivansa tullessaan tarkkailemaan linnoituksen rakennustöitä vuonna 1752. Tästä tuli nimi Kuninkaanportti.
Suomenlinnan rakentamista valvoi kreivi Augustin Ehrensvärd. Eräs Suomen tunnetuimmista lauseista on Ehrensvärdin käsialaa ja löytyy kaiverrettuna kivitaulusta Kuninkaanportin pielestä:
"Eftervard, stå här på egen botn, och lita icke på främmande hielp"
"Jälkimaailma, seiso täällä omalla pohjallasi äläkä luota vieraaseen apuun"
Tuo teksti on eittämättä inspiroinut myös Suomen itsenäisyysliikkeen aktiiveja reilu sata vuotta sitten.
Bastioni Zander
Bastioni Zander rakennettiin vuosina 1748–50 osaksi neljän bastionin linnoitusketjua.
Kuuluisin Bastioni Zander on siitä, että täällä vedettiin ensimmäisen kerran salkoon Suomen lippu ja se tapahtui 12.5.1918. Senaattori P.E.Svinhufvud (myöhemmin Suomen kolmas presidentti) lausui tuolloin:
”Nyt on Suomi vapaa. Nyt liehuu Suomen lippu tämän vanhan linnoituksen harjanteella. Älköön mikään vihollinen koskaan kyetkö vetämään alas tätä lippua, vaan liehukoon se tässä aina.”
Lippu onkin ollut Bastioni Zanderin salossa tuosta päivästä lähtien aina 12.5. - 29.9.
Tehtävät:
Virtuaalikätkön perustamisvuonna 2017 Suomi juhlii sadan vuoden itsenäisyyttään. Kätkön esittelemät kohteet symboloivat Suomen itsenäisyyttä ja tuntuukin sopivalta perustaa tämä virtuaali tänne juuri tänä vuonna.
1. Mene annettuihin koordinaatteihin ja etsi Ehrensvärdin kuuluisat sanat sisältävä kivitaulu. Ota kuva itsestäsi (kasvojen ei tarvitse näkyä) tai gepsistäsi niin, että kivitaulu on taustalla. Katso mallikuva.
2. Siirry Bastioni Zanderiin (ks. waypoint). Ota siellä vastaava kuva lipputangosta, jossa lippu edelleen sata vuotta myöhemmin liehuu kesäkaudella eli 12.5. - 29.9. Katso mallikuva. Talvisin riittää pelkkä kuva bastionista niin, että lipputanko on mukana kuvassa itsesi tai GPS-laitteesi kanssa.

Suomenlinna is a sea fortress situated in front of Helsinki. As a historical monument and a touristic destination its cultural value is remarkable. Suomenlinna is also a strong part of the identity of Helsinki. The contruction of the fortress began in 1748 and it was listed as UNESCO world heritage site in 1991.
King's Gate
The King’s Gate is on the most southern of the Suomenlinna islands in front of the Kustaanmiekka strait. The Gate is the original entrance to the fortress and it is generally considered one of the most recognisable landmarks of Suomenlinna. It was originally built 1753-1754 on the site where the king of Sweden Adolf Frederick had moored his ship as he arrived to observe the construction of the fortress in 1752. Thus, the name King’s Gate.
The construction of Suomenlinna was overseen by count Augustin Ehrensvärd. One of the most known phrases in Finland is by Ehrensvärd and can be found carved on a stone tablet by the King’s Gate:
"Eftervard, stå här på egen botn, och lita icke på främmande hielp"
”Progeny, stand here on your own foundation, and do not rely on foreign help”
Undoubtedly, this famous piece of writing inspired also the activists of the Finnish independence movement over a hundred years ago.
Bastion Zander
Bastion Zander was built under 1848-50 to be a part of fortification chain of four bastions.
It is known as the place where the Finnish flag was hoisted up for the very first time. This took place on May 12 1918. Senator P.E. Svinhufvud (later the 3rd president of Finland) said at the time:
”Now Finland is free. Now the flag of Finland flies over this fortress. Let no enemy ever pull the flag down but let it fly here forever”
Ever since this first day, the flag has been up continuously here at Bastion Zander every year from May 12 until 29 September.
The tasks:
In 2017, when this virtual cache was placed, Finland celebrates its 100 year of independence. These locations symbolize the independence of Finland and it felt particularly right to place the virtual here just this year.
1. Go to the given coordinates and find the stone tablet containing the famous words of Ehrensvärd. Take a picture of yourself (no need to show your face) or your GPS device with the tablet on the background. See the picture example.
2. Proceed to Bastion Zander (see waypoint). Take a similar picture of the flag pole, on the top of which the flag is still flying, a hundred years later on summer season i.e. 12 May - 29 September. See the picture example. In winter time it is enough to take a picture of the bastion so that the flagpole and you or your GPS device are visible.
