Geocache Description:

Welcome to ruins of what was Alabama's State Capitol Building. It was in the year of 1825 when the Alabama State Senate agreed to move the capitol from Cahaba to the thriving town of Tuscaloosa. The building was completed in 1829 and had this beautiful copper dome that could be seen by all the passing vessels down the Warrior River below. The building was fashioned in the Greek Revival, and the Federal styles of Washington D.C. and Thomas Jefferson. The building was used as the capitol until 1846. It was at this time that the state capitol was moved to Montgomery, down in the black belt where more commerce was being conducted along the Alabama River with the majority of the states people. Tuscaloosa lost over half its population after the capitol was moved. The building was then given to The University of Alabama who seldom used it so they leased it to the Baptist Convention who established the Alabama Central Female College. It was in 1923 when it burned down and was suspect to faulty wiring as the cause. These are the remains that we have here today. In order to log the cache, as with all virtuals, you must answer a few questions to prove you came to the coordinates. I figured I would make it a little more fun and have a scavenger hunt of sorts to find the answers which will require you to read several of the plaques around the park to get your answers. DO NOT POST ANSWERS in your log or it will be deleted; please email your answers for credit of your smiley. Questions: 1. How many columns are still standing that are over 5 feet tall? (No plaque research needed) 2. What are the initials carved in the stone at the outer corner of the Secretary of States office. (on a plaque in the park) 3. There is a big oak tree planted outside of the office of the Treasurer. Who is the tree in memory of? (on a plaque in the park) 4. Give me the name of an American Revolutionary Soldier/Patriot who came to Tuscaloosa? (on a plaque in the park) 5. Who was the governor to initiate construction of the capitol building? (on a plaque in the park) Please leave a favorite point if you had a good time and learned some history here. Thanks for visiting.
