H.CH.Andersen v Bratislave

Zatiaľ, čo námorníci v prístave nakladali uhlie do parníka, ktorým priplával, Andersen a iní cestujúci si boli poobzerať centrum mesta.

H.CH.Andersen in Bratislava

(* 1805 Odense (Denmark) — † 1875 Rolighed near Copenhagen (Denmark))— Danish prose writer, playwright, poet and fairy-tale writer

In Bratislava, at Hviezdoslav Square, the statue of world-famous Danish fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen has been revealed on June 2, 2006. Sculptor Tibor Bartfay created it as a gift to a children without a royalty. The statue represents a over-sized author with a cylinder in his hand, originally surrounded by some well-known fairy-tale characters. The bronze sculpture is patinated and there are many colored stones representing flowers of flowers in its surroundings. The installation of the statue was the culmination of the initiative of the Civil Society Association of Hans Christian Andersen and the International House of Art for Children Bibiana. The statue costed four million Slovak crowns, and the money was largely donated by private sponsors. The sad fact is that a few months after the sculpture was unveiled, the Ugly duckling has been broken-off and stolen and unfortunately it was not found anymore and it's still missing.

The fairy-tale writer visited Bratislava in 1841. While sailors loaded coal into a steamer in a harbor, Andersen and other passengers were walking the city center. During a short walk, Andersen wrote in his diary: "Bratislava is a beautiful city full of pretty girls and good wine ... Maybe once you will remember the stranger who visited your town ..."

According some sources his fairy tale "The little match girl" has been inspired by Andersen's visit of Bratislava. While walking around the city, he allegedly met with an unknown little girl who gave a rose to him.
