This virtual is located at Greenmead Historical park, Greenmead Historical Park is open from dawn to dusk year round. To ‘find’ this cache it is not required that you enter the buildings. If you would like to view the interiors of the Historic Buildings tours are available on Sundays, June through October and December (except for holiday weekends) 1-4 PM. There is an admission charge of $3 Adults, $2 Students for the interior tours. Tours start at the Cranson-Hinbern House and Gift Shop. Please call 248-477-7375 for additional information. There is also a Self Guided Tour that will tell you information about each building on the Greenmead property. .

I have been given permission by Greenmead to place this Geocache here. Please be respectful to other visitors and to the area, you may also want to avoid the park during Special Events.

In order to log this cache you must visit each building listed, find the letter on that building, and email/message me with the building/letter combination. There are 6 buildings required. An approximate location of where the letter is on each building will be given in my description. These letters are approximately 1 inch tall and are black on a white background. Any logs that I do not receive verification on or give away any of the secret letters will be deleted.

Cranson-Hinbern and Gift Shop

This building houses the Greenmead gift shop and is the starting point for many of the tours. The gift shop is open Wednesday-Friday 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (May through December) and for Sunday Tour Days (June through October). The gift shop is also open during many special events. The front section of this house was built about 1850 and was later remodeled with Queen Anne features about the turn of the century. The rear section of the house, which was older, was constructed using whole log joists, and was built prior to 1850. The letter is located in the lower left corner of the window to the right of the front door.

Kingsley House

Built in 1843 this home is an outstanding example of Midwestern Greek Revival architecture. Wood used in this home was hewn from trees on the property. Wooden pegs were used in the construction of the floors. The house has its original wood siding. The letter is located in the lower left corner of the window to the right of the front door.

Friends Meeting House

Built in 1846 and used until 1860. This Quaker meeting house replaced one built in approximately 1838. The roof is constructed of bark-covered log rafters with wooden pegs which hold the hand-hewn ridge beam and rafters in place. The building’s framework consists of hand-hewn oak posts and beams. The meetinghouse was divided into two large rooms. Elders and ministers sat opposite the entrance on a raised three-tiered gallery facing the congregation. In 1830, the meetinghouse was sold to Quakers, William and Sarah Roberts, who used the building as a residence. The Friedrich Dietrichs purchased the property in 1903. They raised potatoes and dairy cows and took their milk to the Detroit Creamery Cheese Factory at Seven Mile and Gill Roads. The last family to own the property prior to its acquisition by the city in 1962 were Lloyd and Annie Gullen, who purchased it in 1943. The building served as the city historical museum from 1975 to 1977. The letter is located in the lower left corner of the window that is to the right of the right most door.

Alexander Blue House

This two-story Italianate farmhouse is over one hundred and thirty years old, according to City records. The exterior of the home is constructed of white clapboard. It has a stone foundation and a partial basement with concrete floor. The gable roof is shingled. The curvilinear gingerbread trim along the eaves and gables has long since disappeared. The thirteen interior rooms have pine trim, pine floors, and plaster wall. The letter is located in the lower right corner of the window to the left of the front door.

AJ GEER General Store

The A.J. Geer Store was opened on December 21, 1912 and sold groceries, dry goods, and hardware. It was operated by A.J. Geer and later by Mr. Carson. It was located west of Newburg Road on Ann Arbor Trail. The store is stocked with items listed in the store ledger for the year 1913. This building was moved to Greenmead in 1976. The letter is located on the back of the Geer Store information sign.

Farmhand's House

Close examination of the structure of this house indicates that it is very old, and probably built prior to the Hill House. More recently, after moving it to its present location, it has been added to and modernized and used as a residence for the farmer. It has not been lived in since 1972. The letter is located in the lower right corner of the window to the left of the front door.

Hill House

Built in 1841, this exquisite house is easily seen while traveling on Eight Mile Road. It's the large white Greek Revival farmhouse encased by a white picket fence. In addition to its five fireplaces, the home's interior wood- work and architectural detail is classic 19thcentury style. This house and its surrounding out-buildings exist on the National Register of Historic Sites. The clue is located on the back of the no parking sign.
