Forse non tutti sanno che a Roma è possibile ammirare sei opere di Caravaggio senza dover entrare in un museo.
I dipinti sono custoditi in tre chiese:
- La Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo, che custodisce “La Conversione di San Paolo” (1601) e “La Crocefissione di San Pietro” (1600 – 1601).
- La Chiesa Sant’Agostino con “La Madonna di Loreto o dei Pellegrini” (1604 – 1606).
- La Chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi che al suo interno, presso la Cappella Contarelli, custodisce il “Ciclo di San Matteo”, con le opere (da sinistra verso destra): “La Vocazione di San Matteo” (1599 – 1600), “L’Ispirazione di San Matteo o San Matteo e l'angelo” (1602) e “Il Martirio di San Matteo” (1600 – 1601).
La Virtual vi permetterà di ammirare queste tre opere.
La più significativa è sicuramente “La Vocazione di San Matteo” che rappresenta una svolta nell’opera di Caravaggio e che diverrà da quel momento la sua impronta pittorica, famosa nel mondo, di ispirazione a molti altri artisti suoi contemporanei.
Per aumentare la drammaticità della scena e per focalizzare i protagonisti, l’artista immerge l’opera in una penombra, tagliata da squarci di luce bianca a mettere in evidenza visi, mani e parti dell’abbigliamento rendendo invece quasi invisibile il resto.
La tecnica adottata è, per quei tempi, rivoluzionaria: Caravaggio interviene dipingendo solamente la “Luce”, mentre la parte scura è quella della preparazione della tela (imprimitura)… è grazie a quest’accorgimento che l’opera acquista la sua unicità.
I personaggi sembrano appartenere a due periodi storici differenti… si percepisce dagli abiti: taluni tipici del periodo di Gesù, altri contemporanei a Caravaggio.
Gesù, riconoscibile dall’aureola, indica un altro uomo (molti studiosi pensano che il gesto della mano sia una citazione alla “Creazione” di Michelangelo), che non è altro che San Matteo (con la barba) il quale risponde con un altro gesto come per dire “Stai chiamando me?”.
All’interno dell’opera sono presenti molti significati allegorici, nella chiesa avrete modo di documentarvi.
Per poter loggare questa Virtual è necessario fare due cose:
- entrando nella chiesa vi troverete di fronte a due acquasantiere, sopra di esse è incisa una frase con il nome di un papa, qual è questo nome?
- giunti alla Cappella Contarelli dovrete scattare una foto che ritragga una delle tre opere (quelle originali, non quelle sui pannelli o altre cose nella chiesa) insieme al vostro GPS/Smartphone o a voi stessi mentre la indicate (magari con il gesto di Gesù), non è necessario che vi si veda in volto.
Gli orari di apertura della chiesa sono i seguenti:
- dal Lunedì al Venerdì 9:30 – 12:45 e 14:30 – 18:30
- Sabato 9:30 – 12:15 e 14:30 – 18:45
- Domenica 11:30 – 12:45 e 14:30 – 18:45
- in caso di cerimonie particolari l’accesso può essere momentaneamente vietato.
Come in molte altre chiese di Roma, per poter ammirare meglio le opere, può essere necessario mettere qualche moneta per accendere le luci.

Maybe not everyone knows that Rome offers the possibility to enjoy SIX works from Caravaggio, without getting in any museum.
The paintings are located in three churches:

The most significative is surely “La Vocazione di San Matteo”, which represent a turning point in Caravaggio’s art and from that moment it will become his pictorical mark, famous in the whole world, source of inspiration for a lot of his contemporary artists.
To increase the scene’s drama and to focus the protagonists, the artist immerses the painting in an half-light, cut from slashes of white light to highlight faces, hands and clothing, making the rest almost invisible.
The technique used is innovative for his period: Caravaggio paints just the light, whereas the dark part is the one of the canvas’ preparation (priming) … thanks to this trick the painting gets its own uniqueness.
The characters seem to belong to two diffent historical periods… you can see it from the clothes they’re wearing: some are characteristic of Jesus period, other ones contemporary to Caravaggio. Jesus, recognisable from the halo on his head, points at another man (some researchers think that this hand gesture is a quote of the “Creazione” of Michelangelo), who is none other than San Matteo (with the beard) who reacts with another gesture as if to say “Is it me that you’re calling?”.

If you want log this Virtual it is necessary to do:
- when you enter in the church you will see two holy water fonts, above of them is engraved a sentence with the name of a pope. Which is this name?
- near the "Contarelli's Chapel" you must take a photo that shows one of the three pictures (the original ones, not those on the panels or other things in the church) with your GPS / Smartphone or you pointing at one of the paintings (even with the gesture of Jesus), it is not necessary to show your face.
