The Antarctic station "Kohnen" is a German polar research station in the Antarctic, able to accommodate up to 20 people. It is located about 600 km from the coast and 750 km from Neumayer III Station on the Antarctic plateau at 75°S and 00°04’E, and 2892m above sea level. The station is named after the geophysicist Heinz Kohnen (1938–1997), who was the head of logistics at the Alfred Wegener Institute from 1982 to 1997. Kohnen Station was officially opened on January 11, 2001. It was erected as the base for the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA), which took place between 2001 and 2006. Since then it is used as a logistics base for different research projects. Like the British Halley V station, the base is built on steel legs allowing the station to be jacked up as the height of the snow surface increases. At Kohnen Station, researchers are only active in the Antarctic summer – unlike other stations. Scientific work is being done from November to early February; for the remainder of the year, the inland ice plateau is simply too cold. The station contains a radio room, a mess room, a kitchen, bathrooms, two bedrooms, a snow melter, a store, a workshop, and a power plant (100 kW). The base is resupplied from Neumayer Station III two or three times each year, with up to 6 sledge trains at a time. This traverse takes roughly ten days.
