The Bridge
Sydney Harbour Bridge was designed between 1911 and 1916 and the construction project commenced in 1923. Construction continued through the period of the Great Depression and was completed in early 1932 at a cost of £10,057,170/7/9d. The opening ceremony was on March 19, 1932.
The bridge is affectionately known as "the Coathanger" by many Sydneysiders. Its familiar arch, which supports the suspended carriageway, spans 503 m and and rises to 134 m above mean sea level. Enormous hinges support the ends of each arch and allow it to adjust and move with temperature changes.
The bridge has a total weight of 52,800 tonnes and is held together by six million hand-driven rivets. It is the world's largest (but not longest) steel arch bridge.
The Harbour
Sydney Harbour is a drowned river valley, eroded through sediments laid down some 250 million years ago when the Australian landmass formed part of the Gondwana supercontinent. The harbour is 19km long with a surface area of 55km². Its volume approximates 500 gigalitres which, as a conventional unit of measurement for large volumes of water, is known as a sydharb.
Getting there
Access from the northern side is by the stairs in Broughton St., Milsons Point, not far from Milsons Point train station. From the southern end, access is via sheltered stairs from Cumberland Street in the Sydney Rocks area. There is also access from Circular Quay by taking a lift or stairs up to the Cahill Walk, which runs along the Cahill Expressway.
Logging this Geocache - IMPORTANT!
To log this cache all you need to do is include a photo with your log, taken from the walkway at GZ, of whatever you think is the most impressive sight at the moment of your visit. GZ is at the published coordinates halfway across the bridge span on the eastern walkway. It is nowhere else, not higher, not lower, not North, not South, not East, not West, nowhere else!
As stated in the listing rules for virtual geocaches: "The purpose of the required logging task is to show that the geocacher was at the location." "The cache owner is responsible for deleting logs that appear to be false or inappropriate."
Do not use old photos or photos taken from somewhere else. Obviously, you cannot find a cache before it was published. Sadly, some players don't play fairly in the spirit of the game, and that insults those who do. Many, many invalid "found" claims have been deleted and will be deleted without notice.
