This cache is part of the Historic Boston GeoTour, a series of twelve caches that will take you through the city’s 400 years of history. The USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy. It is the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat. Launched in 1797, it was one of six frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794, signed into law by President George Washington. Old Ironsides was designed by Joshua Humphreys. The ship was built in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts, at Edmund Hartt's shipyard. Old Ironsides is perhaps best known for its actions during the War of 1812. The heavy frigate captured many merchant ships and defeated multiple British warships. The ship circled the world in the 1840's, and carried American artwork and industrial displays to the Paris Exposition of 1878. Read more about Old Ironsides here.
To log this visit as FOUND, you must visit the ship. There are two ways to prove your visit. Either one is enough:
1. Go below the deck to find out who was the First Lieutenant as of January 1840. It's not Peter Turner! The museum staff doesn't have this information. DON'T POST THE ANSWER. Message the cache owner through profile with the correct answer.
OR
2. Post a photo IN YOUR LOG of the ship with you clearly OR your unique caching collectible that is SPECIFIC TO YOU. Generic thumb photos and generic GPS photos not accepted. Photo of you not required, but must include some caching item unique to you. No photo required if you can answer the question above. DON'T SEND PHOTOS TO ME. Failure to fulfill at least one of these will result in log deletion. And no spoilers!
Boarding the USS Constitution is free and is accessible by foot at the end of the Freedom Trail. The ship and museum are open to the public. A security check is required before boarding the ship. Adults must have a valid ID. Children need no ID. The museum is free but donations are accepted. Paid parking is available nearby. Click here for information on visiting the ship.
