Geocache Description:

Nab End Tower - Longwood

Offering stunning views on a clear day over Huddersfield and the Colne Valley.

Directions: From the suggested parking location, walk down Longwood Gate, onto Back Thornhill Road and then take the path on your left which leads to the tower.
The outdoor theatre you pass on your left is used for the annual Longwood Sing, an outdoor gathering of songs and music which has taken place every year since 1873.

History: On Saturday 10th of August 1861 the Nab End Tower was 'opened'. It was the weekend of the annual 'feast' or holiday, which in Longwood was the second weekend in August.

The local tradition is that the tower was built during a period of general depression in trade. This is backed up by notes made by Revd Charles Parker who was Vicar at Longwood from 1851 until his retirement in 1889. His report reads:

"Trade was very depressed and the days of unemployment benefit and walking to town to sign on had not yet come. So one of the unemployed men suggested to his companions in a joking manner that, having nothing better to do they should .. build a tower. Building materials were plentiful, and without and architect or plans they began, and what began in jest ended in earnest."

According to local tradition a blind man, George Hellawell, who had been a mason helped to direct and guild the building of the tower. There are two large stones in the tower with the initials GH engraved on them, near the the engraving of the date.

In 1895 Mr G Shaw of Botham Hall gave the land at Nab End and the Quarry to the people of Longwood for use as a recreation ground.
