Maryland Geocaching History
The very first cache in Maryland was hidden on September 3, 2000, in the dunes of Assateague Island about 5 miles NE of here. The first DNF was logged 8 months later, something that is unheard of these days for a traditional that simply requires a walk on the beach to reach. It was never found and Jeremy archived it in March 2002. The cache had probably been washed away long before the first cacher arrived to search for it. I do NOT recommend visiting the site as you are likely to be bitten by black flies! The location of this virtual is hopefully friendlier and more enjoyable.
Sinepuxent Bay History
Ever since explorer Giovanna da Verrazzano sailed through Sinepuxent Bay in 1524, human activity along these waters has helped shape Assateague's history. Except for intriguing place names on local maps, almost all traces of these historic events have been erased by the passage of time and the island's shifting sands.
Great Egging Island
Recreational activities in the late 1800s included a trip to the coast to go "eggin'," and Great and Little Egging Islands quickly became popular sites. Special picnics were organized for the sole purpose of collecting gull, willet, and other shorebird eggs which were considered great delicacies. Bird protections laws eventually brought egging activities to an end.
To claim this virtual cache as a find:
Visit a little beach on the shore of Great Egging Island at the given coordinates, take photo(s) and include them in your log.
At least one photo must include:
- Yourself (the photo need not include your face) or your GPSr/phone showing coordinates within 100 ft of the given coordinates of this cache, AND
- One or both of the two trees pictured here:

You must physically visit the site to claim a find! Please upload your photo(s) within one week. Logs that do not comply with the requirements will be deleted!
How to get there:
You'll need some sort of non-motorized watercraft to reach the island. There is little to no current in the bay and the water is typically warm and shallow in the summer months. There are crabs running around in the water! Also jellyfish!
The two closest places to park and launch are:
1) The end of Bayside Drive on the east side of the bay inside the fee area of Assateague National Shoreline ($20 for a 7-day pass). N 38° 12.590' W 75° 10.070'. This is the most scenic option since you'll most likely get to see the wild horses of Assateague plus the ocean beach and an earthcache are (almost) just across the road. There's also a place to rent kayaks here, a picnic area, and beach suitable for young children. Camping is very close too but is likely to be fully booked far in advance in warmer months. Note there is a small dropoff from parking to the water so you'll need to be able to carry your watercraft.
2) South Point Boat Ramp on the west side of the bay. No fee. N 38° 13.000' W 75° 11.450'.
