Skulpturen Havmannen er laget av Antony Gormley og er plassert i havet ved sentrum av Mo i Rana. Skulpturen er av granitt, veier 60 tonn og har en høyde på 10,15 meter. Havmannen ble avduket den 6. mai 1995.
Opprinnelig var det meningen å lage skulpturen i stål fra den malmbaserte stålindustrien i Mo i Rana.
Omstillingen i Rana med nedleggelsen av Norsk Jernverk gjorde at dette ikke kunne realiseres,
og skulpturen ble i stedet hugget ut i stein ved Lødingen steinindustri med hjelp av to steinhuggere fra Litauen. Havmannen ble laget av ni deler, som ble transportert til Rana høsten 1994. Dette skulle bli Antony Gormleys første store skulptur i stein.
Vinteren 1994 / 1995 ble det satt opp store undersjøiske fundamenter, og lange pæler skulle sørge for at skulpturen stod stødig i sjøen. Grunnen er av kvikkleire og pælene måtte slås ned til fast grunn.
Monteringen av skulpturen startet våren 1995. Den opprinnelige planen var å plassere Havmannen lengre ut i sjøen, men dette var ikke mulig grunnet kvikkleiren.
Havmannen skapte stor lokal debatt, med mange leserinnlegg i lokalavisen Rana Blad. Deriblant var bruken av offentlige midler til prosjektet omstridt. Mange leserinnlegg dreide seg om skulpturens utseende.
Under avdukingen var det omkring 1100 til stede.
Havmannens plassering i vannet er et uttrykk for de store og sterke elementene som preger Rana-samfunnet, med kontrastene mellom industrien og den mektige naturen som befinner seg tett på hverandre. Når tidevannet står på det høyeste, når det opp til Havmannets lår. Den står vendt med ryggen mot byen, bort fra det industrialiserte samfunnet, skuende ut fjorden mot det åpne havet.

Grunnen er belagt med asfalt og naturstein som er avlang og rektangulær. Fra et bestemt sted, på en bestemt brostein, vil alt du sier skape et ekko.

The sculpture Havmannen (The Sea Man) is made by Antony Gormley and is placed in the sea by the city center of Mo i Rana. The sculpture is made out of granite, weighs 60 tons and is 10,15 meters tall. Havmannen was uncovered on May 6th 1995.
Originally, the plan was to make the sculpture out of steel from the iron ore based steel industry in Mo i Rana. However, the restructuring in the municipality of Rana, with Norsk Jernverk (Norwegian Ironworks) being shut down, made this impossible to achieve. The sculpture was instead cut out of rock at Lødingen steinindustri with the help of two stonemasons from Lithuania. Havmannen consists of nine different parts which were transported to Rana in the Fall of 1994. This would become Antony Gormley's first great sculpture made out of rock.
During the Winter of 1994 / 1995 huge underwater fundaments were set up, and long poles were going to make sure that the sculpture would stand steadily in the sea. The bottom consists of quick mud, and the poles had to be knocked down to solid ground. The assembly of the sculpture began in the spring of 1995. The original plan was to place Havmannen further from land, but this was not possible because of the quick mud.
Havmannen created a huge local debate, with a lot of posts in the local newspaper Rana Blad. For instance, there was a dispute because of the project's use of public means. Many posts were about the sculpture's appearance. During the uncovering, around 1100 people were present.
The placement of Havmannen in the sea is an expression of the big and strong elements that characterize the society in Rana, with the contrasts between the industry and the mighty nature that exist closely to each other. When the tide is on its highest, it reaches Havmannen' thighs. It stands with its back towards the town, away from the industrialized society, gazing upon the fjord towards the open sea. CO's thoughts about Havmannen have always been that it is guarding its town. What do you think? The "official" version of Havmannen's task is somewhat deeper than the one of CO:
"It looks like it is caught up in its own mind, and reflects the existential experiences that we as individuals cannot share with others. We base our feeling of community upon the faith that we share these existential experiences with each other".
To be able to log this virtual geocache, two things are required by you:

In the log, a selfie with Havmannen in the background has to be attached. If you do not wish to show your face in the photo, a photo of e.g. a hand will be sufficient. But remember: Havmannen must in any case be in the photo.
2.
Where you are standing there is a kind of a viewpoint to Havmannen. The ground is covered by asphalt and cobblestone which are oblong and rectangular. From a certain place, on a certain stone, everything you say will create an echo.

Do not wait for CO's reply before you log your find. If you do not receive a reply, it means that you have solved the task correctly.
