The village sign is located on the side of the road running through the centre of the village as you would usually expect
Black Notley is a small village in the Braintree district of northern Essex.
The village is situated to the south of Braintree.
The place-name 'Notley' is first attested in a Saxon charter of 998 as Hnutlea, and appears as 'Nutlea' in the Domesday Book of 1086.
The name means 'nut wood'
