WAYPOINT 1 (A et B)
Rollon, (ou Hrolfr), fondateur de la Normandie, est un petit seigneur (jarl) scandinave né au milieu du IXe siècle, grande époque des invasions vikings. Comme bien d'autres jarls, Rollon arrive en France à la tête de ses norðmen (hommes du Nord) ; il s'impose progressivement à Soissons, puis autour de Rouen.
Après des décennies d'impuissance face à ces invasions vikings, le roi Charles le Simple décide finalement de pactiser avec l'ennemi : fermement installé sur son territoire, Rollon est désormais un ennemi familier et semble capable de se défendre. Rollon et Charles signent donc en 911, le Traité de Saint-Clair sur Epte qui cède officiellement à Rollon et ses Normands le territoire conquis (plus ou moins l’ex Haute-Normandie), à condition qu'ils protègent ce territoire des autres vikings... C'est ainsi que la Normandie voit le jour, et que les invasions vikings cessent dans le nord-ouest de la France, permettant au roi de reprendre le contrôle sur le reste du territoire.

Le baptême de Rollon
WAYPOINTS 2 à 4 (C à F) :
Autre condition du traité, Rollon est baptisé en 912 à la cathédrale de Rouen. Il devient le premier seigneur de la « Terre des hommes du Nord », la Normandie. Il continue à guerroyer jusqu’à ce que l’âge le force à céder la place à son fils Guillaume Longue-Epée, en 927. Il meurt entre 928 et 935.
A la suite de son père, Guillaume continue les conquêtes, donnant à la Normandie sa surface définitive. Sa puissance inquiète tellement les seigneurs voisins qu’en 942, ils profitent d’un traité de paix pour l’assassiner. Guillaume, comme son père, repose à la cathédrale de Rouen. Le gisant de Rollon, malheureusement, a été détruit dans les bombardements de 1944; le tombeau visible dans la cathédrale est celui d'un descendant de Rollon (mais n'est pas non plus d'époque).
A partir du WP2, il est conseillé d’enregistrer les indices hors-ligne car on ne capte pas toujours bien sous 30t de fonte...
WAYPOINT 1 (A and B)
Born in the mid-9th c., Rollo (Hrolfr), the founder of Normandy, was the son of a Scandinavian jarl (=earl). He was just one petty chieftain among the hordes of Viking warriors who laid waste to France in the 9th century. Leading a growing army of Norðmen (Northerners), he waged war all along the Seine River, briefly settling in the region near Soissons, then near Rouen.
King Charles le Simple realised he was powerless to check the ongoing Viking depredations. By then, Rollo had become a known evil, so to say. So in 911, the King offered him a deal: the territory conquered by Rollo (roughly half of current Normandy) became his officially, provided he was able to protect it against other Viking raids. Rollo did so successfully and, besides founding Normandy, he made it possible for France to rally elsewhere. Within a few decades, the raids stopped.

Rollon's baptism

As per the treaty, Rollo was baptised in 912 in the Cathedral of Rouen ; he became the first lord of the « Northmenland » –Normandy. He continued to make war until 927, when old age forced him to step aside in favour of his half-Frankish son Guillaume « Longue Epée « (William Longsword). The exact date of his death is not known (between 928 and 935).
Following in his father’s footsteps, William continued his conquests, giving Normandy its current size. His power was such a cause for worry among Frankish Lords that in 942, they took opportunity of a peace treaty to murder him. William and his father both are buried in the Cathedral of Rouen.
It should be noted that both of them actually used their Viking title, jarl, though the word was (incorrectly) translated as duke by contemporary historians. The title duke actually was formally adopted under Rollo’s great-grandson.
