Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to the site of The Battle of Malcolm's Mills, which was the last battle of the War of 1812 fought on Canadian soil.

In October 1814, a second mill burning raid began at the Detroit frontier by the Americans. The invading force consisted of about 700 mounted infantry and was commanded by Brigadier General Duncan McArthur. They were able to penetrate as far as the Grand River, before heading south to raid settlements along Lake Erie.

At Malcolm's Mills (now Oakland) on November 6, 1814, McArthur's men encountered a group of 150 combined British and Canadian militia. A stiff battle ensued, which McArthur succeeded in defeating, by sending a unseen detachment downstream, to cross and attack the militia from the rear. This flanking maneuver caught the militia by surprise, and the American force quickly drove them from the field.
It is said, that before the Americans torched the mill, the crafty miller had safely removed all his sacks of flour to a hiding spot in the nearby woods covered with brush piles.
The Americans did destroy the mills and stores of grain, depriving the British and Canadian forces in Canada of their major source of flour. This caused hardships for the area residents for sometime after the war ended.
