The founding of Gravelbourg founding dates back to 1906. Abbé Louis-Pierre Gravel, a colonizing missionary for southern Saskatchewan, was responsible for attracting settlers to the area. Abbé Gravel's mission was to have Francophones settle on the free homesteads being offered to new residents.
Abbé Gravel also ensured that the new village had access to all the important services: post office, parish, school, and shops. As well, he was partly responsible for the Canadian Pacific Railway going through Gravelbourg. The village was named in his honour.
Today Gravelbourg remains an active community, where a large portion of the residents speak French. Because of its European architecture, it is referred to as the "cultural jewel" of Saskatchewan.

La fondation de Garvelbourg remonte à l’année 1906. C’est l’abbé Louis-Pierre Gravel, missionnaire colonisateur pour le Sud de la Saskatchewan, qui s’occupe à attirer des colons dans la région. L’abbé Gravel se donne comme mission de placer des colons francophones sur les concessions gratuites offertes aux nouveaux résidents.
L’abbé Gravel s’assure aussi que le nouveau village ait accès à tous les services importants : bureau de poste, paroisse, école et commerces. C’est aussi en partie grâce à lui que le tracé du chemin de fer du Canadien Pacifique passe par Gravelbourg. Le village sera nommé en son honneur.
Aujourd’hui Gravelbourg est une communauté toujours aussi active où une grande partie de ses habitants parle le Français. Son architecture européenne lui confère le surnom de « bijou culturel » de la Saskatchewan.
