Une butte-témoin est, dans un bassin sédimentaire, un fragment d'un banc rocheux résistant, isolé par l'érosion et entouré à son pied par des affleurements des niveaux inférieurs. C'est le reste d'un massif plus grand qui a été érodé avec le temps.

ENGLISH

A mound-witness is, in a sedimentary pond, a fragment of a resistant rocky bench, isolated by the erosion and surrounded in its foot by outcrops of the lower levels. It is the rest of the bigger massif which was affected in time.

Située sur une butte témoin, un ensemble géologique particulier en Limousin, Ayen est le point culminant de l’Yssandonnais à 370 mètres offrant des paysages extraordinaires. Cette butte témoin marque la limite entre deux bassins géologiques différents. Cette formation date de l'Ere Secondaire, soit il y a 251 millions d'années! A cette période, on constate aussi le retrait définitif de la mer qui donnera bien plus tard naissance à de jolis villages perchés: Ayen, Saint Robert, Perpezac le Blanc, Yssandon...

Placed on a mound witness, a particular geologic set in Limousin, Ayen is the peak of Yssandonnais in 370 meters offering extraordinary landscapes. This mound witness marks the limit between two different geological ponds. This formation dates the Secondary era, is there is 251 million years! In this period, we also notice the definitive retreat of the sea which will much later give rise to attractive perched villages: Ayen, Saint Robert, Perpezac le Blanc, Yssandon...
