Geocache Description:

This two-stage hunt will take you on a short trip west of Winston-Salem and a hundred or so years back in time. The initial coordinates direct you to a location where you can find the answers to the questions that provide the coordinates of the cache. Take some time strolling around this area. The answers may be found at several locations:

N 36 _ _ . _ _ _
W 80_ _ . _ _ _

How many years did this location serve as the county seat? Take the second digit of the result and place it into the first digit of the North coordinate.

When did Dudley open his store? Insert the third digit of the year in the second blank of the North coordinate.

In what year was the railway station built? Place the third digit of this year in the third blank of the North coordinate.

**** Update 8/4/2002: Since there seems to be two possible dates for the railway station, use the year 1890. The correct digit is 9.

When was the courthouse built? Multiply the third digit in this year by three and enter it into the fourth blank of the North coordinate.

There’s a famous cowboy on a sign on the side of the General Store. How many letters are in the name of his horse? Subtract 2 from than number and place the result in the fifth blanks of both the North and the West coordinate.

How many years was the hotel open for business? Add 1 to the number of years and enter the result in the first and second blanks of the West coordinate.

How many letters are in this area’s name? Enter the result in the third blank of the West coordinate.

In what year was the area named an historic district? Enter the third digit of this year in the fourth blank of the West coordinate.

Once you have completed the coordinates, hop back in the car to get to the final stage. Please be aware that the land adjacent to the cache location is private. Unfortunately, the public area is not very well marked. Do not make a left turn to park at the picnic shelter beside the trailer, despite the fact that the distance may seem close. Continue straight on the gravel road until it dead ends in front of an old house. There is a bulletin board at this location which details the history surrounding it. Directly behind the house a persimmon tree grows beside a trailhead. This trail will get you close to the cache, but be prepared for some light bushwhacking (dress appropriately) once you’re off the trail.

The original contents of the cache included:

-Pocket knife
-Waterproof match case
-Modeling clay
-Marvel comics poster with coloring pens
-Bungee cords
-Carabiners
-Star Trek paperback book
-Etc.

Enjoy!
