Vransko jezero
Vransko jezero (Lake Vrana) in Dalmatia is the largest lake in Croatia. It is a designated nature park, a kind of protected area in Croatia. It is located in Zadar County and Šibenik-Knin County.
The area of the lake is 30.7 square kilometers, the elevation of its surface is only 0.1 meters, while its maximum depth is 4 meters. The lake is in a karst valley filled with water and is a rare example cryptodepression.
Vransko Lake Nature Park
The dominant feature of the park is a special ornithological reserve, an almost untouched natural habit of birds, a rare wetland systems, full of high biodiversity and an outstanding scientific and ecological value. j.
Vransko jezero is Croatia's largest natural lake and one of the last Mediterranean wetlands in Croatia. In the NW part of the park, there is a special ornithological reserve with the largest nesting population of pygmy cormorant in Croatia. The wetland and bird habitat is of international importance (RAMSAR, IBA). Over 100.000 water bird individuals winter here.
A small wetland area of 8.83 square kilometers is the rest of the once tenfold larger Vrana Swamp, dried in the 18th century by digging the canal Prosika (1770 AD), which brought the wetland and wildlife that depended on it to the brink of survival.
Cryptodepression
A cryptodepression is a lake which has its water surface above sea level and its deepest point below sea level. The term is derived from the Ancient Greek word "kryptos" ("hidden") and depression. A depression is a landform below the surrounding area and below sea level.
A cryptodepression is often due to creation of a rift valley or a glacial lake. Here at Vransko jezero the cryptodepression is in a karst valley filled with water. The world's deepest cryptodepression is lake Baikal (-1286 meters below sea level), Croatia's deepest cryptodepression (-61,5 m) is Vransko jezero at the island of Cres.

Vransko jezero s površinom od 30,16 km2 najveće je prirodno jezero u Republici Hrvatskoj. Dugo je 13,6 km a široko od 1,4 do 3,5 km. Površina mu je iznad a dno ispod morske razine. Največa dubina iznosi 4 m. Jezero je kanalom Prosika, prokopanim 1770 g., a proširenim 1953 g. dužine 850 m i širine dna 8,0 m povezano s morem.
Park prirode Vransko jezero
- najveće prirodno jezero i jedna od posljednjih mediteranski močvara u Hrvatskoj
- u SZ dijelu Parka nalazi se poseban ornitološki rezervat s najvećom gnijezdećom populacijom malog vranca u Hrvatskoj
- močvara i stanište ptica od međunarodne važnosti (RAMSAR, IBA); zimovalište za preko 100 000 jedinki ptica vodarica.
Područje u kojem se nalazite ornithološki najvrjednijih područja u Hrvatskoj te je 1983. godine proglašeno ornithološkim rezervatom, upravo zbog tršćaka i poplavnih livada koji vrve ptićjih vrsta. To povremeno ili stalno boravi čak 256 vrsta ptica.
Kriptodepresija
Kriptodepresija (od grč. "kryptos" (skriven) i lat. "depressio" (spuštanje)) je udubljenje ispunjeno vodom čija površina je iznad morske razine, a dno ispod morske razine. Najveća kriptodepresija je Bajkalsko jezero (-1286 m), a u Hrvatskoj je to Vransko jezero na Cresu (-61,5 m).
Vransko jezero je kriptodepresija. Kriptodepresija je kada je površina jezera iznad razine mora, dok je dno jezera ispod razine mora.
