Geocache Description:

Andermatt

The parish church of St. Columban was already in existence in the 11th century, while the present building dates back to around 1300. This church is the most important Romanesque ecclesiastical building in the canton of Uri.

In the early Middle Ages, Ursern came under the authority of the Benedictine monastery of Disentis. The monastery gifted the Church of St. Columban to the settlement near the present-day barracks. The late Romanesque church has an exposed façade with masonry comprising natural stone. The building has remained virtually unchanged since the 17th century.

St. Columban was the parish church for the entire Ursern Valley until the new church of St. Peter and Paul was completed in 1606. St. Columban then became known as the “Valley Church” and this is why this part of Andermatt is known as “Altkirch” (old church).

Cache:    It is not in the walls of the church, but follow the clue.
