Svaneti is located in the northwest of Georgia, on the southern side of the Great Caucasus mountain range. Geographically and historically, the region is considered to be divided into two - Upper Svaneti and Lower Svaneti. Most of the area under 1800 meters is covered with woods. The forest border is often over 2500 meters, but from 1800 to 3000 meters, the mountains are covered by beautiful flower beds and green pastures. Osjba is Svaneti's most legendary mountain and can be seen from large parts of the country. The highest mountain in Georgia, Sjkhara, is located in Upper Svaneti and extends over 5100 moh. The inhabitants are called Swans and are considered to be an ethnic subgroup of the Georgians. By religion belong to the Georgian Orthodox Christians. Swans even have their own language, but they are used most verbally. They are very proud of their origins and firmly maintain their own traditions and lifestyles.
Grand Hotel Ushba is a small mountain hotel with a magnificent location at the foot of the 4710-meter high Osjba mountain, one of Europe's tallest. The hotel itself claims that it may have the best hotel location in the whole world - it's big words, but not impossible. The hotel was opened in 2010 and is owned by the Argvlian family. The mother of the family is an excellent cook, while the sons are both mountain guides and paramount men. The hotel has a simple yet elegant standard. 5 of the 13 rooms have en suite bathrooms, the rest share bathrooms. All rooms are non-smoking and have a beautiful mountain view. The hotel is radio and TV-free but wireless internet is available. The restaurant is located on the first floor and is renowned for its fine, black cuisine and excellent Georgian wines. The charming little library and view balcony provide further opportunities to relax and enjoy the landscape, possibly with a good book.
