CM 27 - THE SIEGE
Piet Joubert studied the map. It was taken to a British courier, captured while trying to get help for the sieged garrison. He saw the defensive position of the enemy and the disposition of his own forces: the Boers. But the most important part of this document was the secret message written there, in an unknown code.
He called Christian de Wet, one of his generals, to study the document. De Wet realized there was an even number of letters as it happened in other captured documents. So, he inferred the British used a polyalphabetic system by taking pairs of letters. As they had other messages written in a similar code, they studied the pattern and understood the cipher system. But… to decipher the current message they needed a key word…
So, they interrogated the courier. And the only answer they got before his death was: “the first name and the family name of the developer of the system”.
