Geocache Description:

The Honeysuckle Creek tracking station is recognised for broadcasting the first steps on the moon to the world, but it turned out to be harder than expected to do this.

The tracking station is surrounded by hills (this is desirable to reduce interference) and so it was found that there was no way to relay the received TV signal to the world. There was already an existing radio link to the Tidbinbilla tracking station, but this was only for voice & data and not capable of carrying video.

A location was found near the tracking station, 50 metres off the ground that had a view of the microwave TV tower at Williamsdale. From here the signal could be sent to Red Hill, then over Coaxial cable or Microwave link to Sydney and the rest of the world via satellite. A temporary tower was erected with a passive repeater just prior to the Apollo 11 landing to enable this relay.
