The Eternal Flame was created by Burnett Zeek between 1955 and 1959. The work depicts a colossal hand holding a giant torch floating in the center of a sea of concrete pavement. Eight feet in height, it is constructed of white concrete and marble chips, with internal steel reinfocercement set twelve feet below ground, which enables it to be self-supporting. It was created to honor Roxbury residents who served the country during World War II. In addition to communicating such virtues as strength and protection, it also conjures notions of freedom and justice, because it reminds the viewer of the most famous torch in America: that belonging to the statue of liberty. The artist, Burnett Zeek, earned a living as an industrial designer with Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Township. His fifteen-year-old son, posing with a torch, served as the model for Eternal Flame. The sculpture was dedicated on Memorial Day 1955, rededicated in 1959. It was originally located at the old Roxbury Police Station on Route 10.
In addition to the Eternal Flame, Roxbury Township has also added memorial plates to honor those men and women whom gave the ultimate sacrifice and/or served in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I & II, Korean War, and the first Gulf War.
The memorial is located within Horseshoe Lake Park, Roxbury Twp.'s biggest recreational park! You can play soccer, football, baseball, basketball, and even two (2) lit volleyball fields. The park also has a 2 mile walking track around the entire park, and from here you can link up to the WMG trail which has 26 geocaches placed along it's 6 miles. In the summer time, Horseshoe Lake's beach is open to the public as well, and there is a large picnic grove available as well. Now you have another reason to visit the park - the first puzzle cache to be placed here.
The coordinates for the Blue Question Mark are important. They will get you to the starting point required to start this puzzle. Pay attention, and follow the instructions! You will be looking for the answers to complete the coordinates for the geocaches final hiding spot! Assume N 40 5(a).(b)(c)(d) W 074 3(e).(f)(g)(h). Easy right?!?
When you arrive here, take the pathway and walk towards the outstretched hand holding the torch. When you reach the memorial, do an about-face (turn 180 degrees). Your mission is to collect various clues from the memorials that surround you. See the wall you just walked through. There are two (2) plaques on both sides of the walkway. Proceed to the plaque on your right.
Count the total number "L"'s on the plaque. That's it, nothing more for Value D.
Now go to the plaque on the left side of the walkway. How many letters in the last name of the Secretary that worked with the Roxbury Memorial Association in 1959? This will be Value C.
Having gotten your information here, stand up and you will see an "L"shape memorial, constructed of stainless steel plates (mentioned earlier) that contain the names of the soldiers whom lived in Roxbury Township from the Revolutionary War, through the first Gulf War.
One section of the plate lists those groups, and individuals that were responsible for the construction of the portion of "The Eternal Flame" on November 11, 2001. Please provide either the first, or last number of the Local Ironworker Union whom volunteered to construct this portion of the memorial, if you would like the Value of A
One of the groups of names listed in the Roxbury memorial, belongs to those brave men that fought and/or died in the Korean War, which is technically still occurring since an armistice was never signed between North & South Korea! How many men are listed with a last name starting with the letter "Z"? This is your Value for G.
Next, look for the plate listing the names of the residents that died and/or fought during the first Gulf War, fought in 1991. Find the first name listed. Count the total number of letters in his last name. Then subtract the total number of letters of his last name, from the number of letters in his first name. This will be your Value F.
There is a small section, of one of the stainless steel plates that honors the soldiers whom fought, died, or served during the first Gulf War in 1991. What is the total number of names listed in each specific column, minus 1? This number will be your Value for B
We are honoring the men involved in the Korean War again. Look for the Guerriero family name. How many men, from this Roxbury family, made the ultimate sacrifice and never made it back home from the Korean War, but are honored here? This is your Value for H.
Almost finished. Just southwest of the soldier memorials, is the memorial dedicated to those Roxbury residents that passed away from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001. There is a piece of the WTC tower in the center of the memorial. How many rivets/anchors are seen sitting out of the top of the piece of steel? Add this to the number of Guerriro family members you just discovered, for the Value of E.
